Under The Yoke
Thesis exhibition at Bezalal Academy of Art
Reflecting on our intense consumerist society where even spirituality and nature have become perpetually commodified and appropriated, Romy creates a constellation of sculptures through a mix of natural and artificial materials, wood sprouts a white plaster body, eggs become epoxy candles, a set of bronze fingers attach themselves to a ballet barre.
Romy offers a deeper look into current “well being” trends that are supposed to aid us in coping with this chronic intensity. She offers a moment of meditation, a kind of discomposed meditation. The sculptures in the space appear frozen in the midst of their creation, evoking a simultaneous sense of becoming and decay. While each piece stands independently, together they form an atmosphere that resembles a bizarre version of a home gym. Joining the sculptures in the space, the viewer acts as an additional presence in this reflection, generating further meaning and interpretation alongside her own personal narratives.
